About This Quote

When he was at Oxford University during World War II, William Golding wrote a novel about a group of young men who, while at boarding school, take refuge in the woods. The book was titled Pincher Martin. When it was published in 1958, Golding said the book was about “a small group of boys who have gone out into an unknown world to find out what makes life worth living.” Years later, Golding found that he had been wrong. He wrote that his book was really about “a small group of boys who are afraid to die alone in the woods … afraid to face the unknown.”
